Stephanos Stephanou was elected new General Secretary of the Central Committee of Cyprus’ major opposition party, left - wing AKEL (Progressive Party of Working People) on Sunday afternoon.
Stephanou was elected by the Central Committee of AKEL, comprising of 105 members.
He received 74 of the 103 valid votes or 71.84%, while his rival, Yiorgos Loukaides received 29 votes or 28.16%.
