Justice Minister calls for unity

06/08/2018 15:15

Minister of Justice and Public Order Ionas Nicolaou called for unity in the domestic front in light of the continuous Turkish provocations, the new initiative of the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus problem and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades` efforts for the resumption of Cyprus talks.

Speaking on Sunday at a memorial service, the Minister noted that continuous Turkish provocations and the possibility of their escalation against Cyprus’ sovereign rights "must make us stand together," while the new initiative of the Secretary-General and the continuous efforts made by President Anastasiades also need to find us in unity.

Together we will be able to achieve more with a view to curb the Turkish intransigence at the negotiating table, the Minister said according to a press release issued by the PIO.

Nicolaou noted finally that all efforts need to be made, in order to reach a just, comprehensive and functioning Cyprus solution “without troops, guarantors and guardians.”

Cyprus remains divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island. Numerous UN - backed talks, aiming at reunifying the island under a federal roof, have failed to yield any results. A Conference on Cyprus which took place in July last year at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
