Anastasiades-Macron agree that EU needs to have a decisive and leading role in the region

The EU needs to have a decisive and leading role in the region and France will work to this end, the Presidents of Cyprus and France agreed during their meeting today in Paris.

Government Spokesman Kyriakos Koushos said in a written statement that the meeting between President Anastasiades and Emmanuel Macron was productive, has yielded results and took place in an excellent and friendly environment.

Anastasiades and Macron evaluated the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean  and agreed that the EU must use all means to safeguard that there is peace and security in the region.

They also expressed the political will to further enhance the bilateral relations in other areas  apart from defence and security, such as education, culture, tourism and economy.

The leading role of France in the Cyprus problem as a permanent member of the UN Security Council was also discussed in the meeting.

The two Presidents also discussed the results of the recent European Council and Cyprus President praised the role of France for an agreement in the Multiannual Financial Framework.

Recent developments in Syria and Libya were also on the agenda.
