Community leaders meet

19/04/2016 16:12
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci meet on Tuesday afternoon in their last scheduled meeting for April, in the context of the UN-backed Cyprus reunification talks.

The meeting will take place at 18.00 pm local time (15.00 GMT). Their last meeting took place on March 28. Governance and property issues are expected to be discussed today.

In statements after their last meeting the President said they discussed a broad range of issues, with regard to the topics on which common understanding has been reached. The discussion, he said, focused on ways these understandings can be translated into convergence.

He added that, even in areas of common understanding, there are still problems. During the next meeting, he went on, the leaders will pose specific questions "in order to clear some things up and see where we are heading to".

The next meetings have been scheduled for April 25 and May 9.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-led talks resumed in May last year aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
