The President of the Cyprus Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, will participate in the Meeting of the European Political Community, takes place, on Thursday, in Prague.

Government Spokesperson, Marios Pelekanos, who accompanies President Anastasiades to the Czech capital, has said that the Intergovernmental Meeting of the European Political Community will take place for the first time, with the participation of a total of 44 Heads of State and Government, 27 from EU member States and others 17 from countries of the European continent and aims to exchange views among the participating leaders with a view to creating conditions of security, stability and prosperity of the European continent as a whole, especially in the light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, including aspects of energy, climate change, migration and other issues.

He added that, since the leaders will be concerned with issues of peace and security in Europe, the Cyprus problem will be among the issues to be discussed, while late on Thursday afternoon President Anastasiades will hold a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of countries beyond the EU.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
