Trump, Guterres, Xi Jinping congratulated Cyprus President

US President Donald Trump has congratulated Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on his re-election, noting that he values the US partnership with Cyprus, which is based on shared values and commitment to democracy.

Anastasiades received a congratulatory message from the President of the United States of America Donald Trump on the occasion of his re-election as President of the Republic of Cyprus, a presidency press release issued here today said.

“Congratulations on your re-election. Your victory shows that people trust you to continue Cyprus’ economic recovery and to reunify the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation," the message read.

"I value the US partnership with Cyprus, which is based upon our shared values and commitment to democracy," the US President added.

"Best wishes to you and the people of Cyprus,” Trump's message concluded. China’s President Xi Jinping has expressed the wish to work towards enhanced cooperation with Cyprus, in a congratulatory message to Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on the occasion of his re-election.

In his message Xi Jinping expresses his warmest congratulations and best wishes for Anastasiades’ next term in office, a presidency press release issued here today says.

China and Cyprus enjoy a long-standing relationship of mutual political trust, have often had an exchange of visits and a fruitful cooperation, it adds.

China’s President also notes that the development of relations between China and Cyprus is very important to him.

"I would like to work with you to consolidate the traditional friendship between the two peoples and to enhance cooperation in the context of jointly building on “one Zone and one Road” as well as substantial cooperation in various areas, so that we can promote bilateral relations to a new level to the benefit of both countries and peoples," he notes.

He also wishes that “your country and people enjoy prosperity.”

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has sent Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades a congratulatory message on his re-election in which he said that he looks forward to his continued cooperation and efforts to resolve the long-standing Cyprus problem, adding that the UN will continue to be supportive of such efforts.

“I would like to convey my congratulations and best wishes upon your re-election as President of the Republic of Cyprus," Guterres` message read, according to a presidency press release issued here today.

The UN SG wished President Anastasiades "every success in carrying out your mandate and trust that we will continue to work together to address the many complex global challenges that lie ahead."

"I look forward to your continued cooperation and efforts to resolve the long-standing Cyprus problem. The United Nations will continue to be supportive of such efforts,” Guterres` message concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks commenced at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana on June 28, but in the early hours of July 7, it was announced that the Conference on Cyprus ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
