DISY Deputy Chairman, Averof Neophytou criticized government on Monday for turning to easy solutions in its inability to deal with the island’s economy, such as the imposition of fines and the price hike in fuel.

“The Cypriot citizens sees his income vanishing and the Cyprus economy getting in trouble”, Mr. Neophytou noted, stressing that the government insists on an economic rapprochement with ideological character, which has been proved unsuccessful in the past.

Mr. Neophytou criticized the new government for adopting a conservative policy that lacks vision and inspiration. Similarly, former Commerce Minister, Nicos Rolandis said that the government’s policy to subsidize heating oil to certain citizens only was a mistake and insisted that the government’s decision to close the Larnaca Refinery seven years earlier will cost $150 million.

Deputy Finance Commissioner, Iosif Iosif said that according to the DISY proposals, the Cyprus economy will be able to recover without affecting the prosperity of the citizens if: the government proceeds to the privatization of the semi-governmental organizations, if there is a restraint of the state payroll and if the government settles its pendencies for the issue of titles in constructions for which no titles have been issued due to breaches.
