09/02/2005 08:58
The appointment of managers at the CTO offices abroad with an annual cost of £60 thousand will no longer exist. In his interview to StockWatch, CTO Chairman, Fotis Fotiou said that the Tourism Organization is reviewing the cost and the efficiency of the offices overseas and is currently proceeding to certain changes that will allow a more flexible operation of the Organization, adjusted to the prevailing conditions worldwide.

Mr. Fotiou also stressed the need for a number of changes in the private sector, which must follow the CTO. “The Cyprus tourist industry has still two comparative advantages against its competitors: the sea, the sun, the warmth and the hospitability of the Cypriots. These, however, are not enough to protect Cyprus against the strong competition worldwide. The private sector must contribute to the enrichment of its product and restrain the operating cost so as not to destroy the advantages from the improvement of the infrastructure. The efforts for the improvement of the tourist product will take long”, he said.

Invited to comment on the latest reports concerning the relation of Publicis with Marketway which belongs to the Commerce Minister’s wife and the its participation (Marketway) in the competition for the CTO campaign abroad, Mr. Fotiou referred to the adoption of new regulations by the CTO. “The CTO Board of Directors is no longer involved in the evaluation of tenders”, he said.

Mr. Fotiou also emphasized the CTO’s willingness to cooperate with the T/C in case of a Cyprus settlement. “A T/C tour operator based in Germany has approached the CTO and has requested its inclusion in the Company’s program in the free and occupied areas”, Mr. Fotiou concluded. CTO reply was not negative.
