In his statements after the end of the meeting with the Central Bank Governor, Christodoulos Christodoulou, Piraeus Bank Chairman, Michalis Sallas, tried to redefine the relation between Piraeus Bank and Bank of Cyprus. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Sallas confirmed that the administrations of the two banks are in agreement for the sale of shares that Piraeus Bank holds in Bank of Cyprus. “There will be a friendly agreement with BOCY for the disposal of 8.2%. The relation between the two banks is friendly and I hope that it will improve. We had submitted a friendly proposal for cooperation and we did not return with a hostile proposal so as not to create problems among the BOCY shareholders”, the Greek banker reiterated.

The managements of the two banks will meet tonight at the banquet that will be held by the Bank of Cyprus in honour of Mr. Sallas.

As regards to the Public Offer that Piraeus Bank submitted for the acquisition of MPB, Mr. Sallas was brief. “We submitted the proposal to the Central Bank. We believe that everything will be alright”, he said.

On the other hand, CB Governor stated that the proposal will be examined thoroughly by the Central Bank on the basis of the current legislation. “If we need additional details, we will ask for it”, he added.
Invited to comment on the latest statements of Hellenic Bank Chairman, Andreas Panayiotou that HB favours the increase in the share capital of the Archbishopric in the bank, Mr. Christodoulou was discreet. He said that the main regulations of the free market should not be ignored and referred to article 13 of the law, according to which the CB has the right to reject or not the increase in the stakes that the major shareholders hold in banks (more than 10%).
