Proposal on EU funds

19/11/2003 12:34
Cyprus runs the risk of receiving lower EU funds for the finance period 2007-2013, if the absorbance of the existing funds remains low, Chairman of the Political Modernization Movement, Christos Stylianides said on a press conference on the launch of a coordinative institution of information for issues of European adjustment.

The party’s proposal includes the introduction of an institution of coordination of the state’s services and businesses, the launch of info points on a nationwide basis and the provision of tax incentives to companies that provide consultant services for the absorbance of the EU funds.

“The new institution will be staffed by a small and flexible group of civil servants, who will be well aware of EU issues. We do not recommend the introduction of a new bureaucratic service. Its role will be coordinative”. Mr. Stylianides said.

More companies to offer consultant services

Mr. Stylianides emphasized the need to introduce more companies that offer consultant services for the EU funding in Cyprus, as the number of such companies is currently fairly limited (four of five).

“The new institution must cooperate with and exploit fully the private initiative, by offering tax incentives and joint participation of the state and the companies to the European programs on information”, Mr. Stylianides noted.

Impacts from the lack of information

Mr. Stylianides stressed that the lack of information might have negative impacts on the Cyprus economy and society, generating euro-skepticism tendencies, expanding the phenomenon of civil convulsions and reducing the capacity of the Cyprus businesses to compete in the international economic environment.
