Political parties ‘attack’ study on Annan plan

26/09/2003 15:41
Central Bank Governor, Christodoulos Christodoulou said on Friday that the study on the economic impacts of the Annan plan prepared by former Cyprus President, Giorgos Vasileiou, is unrealistic.

Mr. Christodoulou noted that the study is over-optimistic and clashes with the preliminary study of the Central Bank, which supported that the impacts from the adoption of the UN plan would be poignant. “The impacts on the Cyprus economy will be dramatic. Economy will not be in the position to bear the burden of the negative impacts of the Annan plan”, CB Governor said.

“Although Mr. Vasileiou’s report stresses the need for radical changes in the provisions of the Annan plan, it gives the impression that the plan will bring economic growth and prosperity”, Mr. Christodoulou said, stressing that the allowances to be granted will be restricted and lower than expected.

Political parties ‘attack’ the study

AKEL: Left-wing Party AKEL commented on the expediency of the time of publication, since this was presented on a period when the government prepares thorough studies on the economic impacts.

House Chairman and AKEL Secretary, Demetris Christofias has expressed his disagreement as to the positive economic impacts and the prospects of a possible Cyprus settlement based on the Annan plan.

“We must avoid short-lived viewpoints. We must neither prettify nor reject the Annan plan, since a new round of talks might begin”, Mr. Christofias said.

DIKO: DIKO’S stance was harsher. “Mr. Vasileiou must realize that the political parties must support the government when it makes serious and critical efforts on the Cyprus problem and avoid actions that undermine these efforts.

SK EDEK: Honorary EDEK Chairman, Vasos Lyssarides said that the study of Mr. Vasileiou is a “devious method to sale the Annan plan to the Cyprus people”.

DISY Chairman: Unrealistic arguments

DISY Chairman, Nicos Anastasiades has expressed his surprise on the criticisms made to Mr. Vasileiou, emphasizing that the arguments used by the other political parties are “unsuccessful and unrealistic”. “It is obvious that they haven’t even read the study”, Mr. Anastasiades noted.
