The use of credit cards in January 2011 recorded the highest increase of the past few months, raising expectations for an improvement in consumer demand.

The figures boost estimates for an improvement of the consumer climate, despite calculations for the opposite.

The figures on the increase from the VAT revenues, which concern the first ten days of January, were released yesterday.

According to new JCC payments data, the value of credit card transactions by Cypriots in the domestic market in January 2011 recorded an annual increase of 16% to €186.5 million.

According to JCC, the renewal of the car licenses and the increase in the turnover from the imposition of VAT on food and medicine contributed partly to this increase.

The number of transactions rose 15% to 2.5 million.

Most credit cards were used in supermarkets (18.85%), government services (16.62%) and clothes (14.25%).

The use of credit cards by Cypriots abroad surged 9% to €100.3 million for the same month.

The number of transactions stood at 704.2 thousand (+2%).

As for the non-Cypriots, the value of their credit card transactions soared 24% to €22.2 million.

The number of transactions rose 13% to 201 thousand.
