Govt. spokesman stands up for FINMIN

26/01/2006 14:56
Government Spokesman, Giorgos Lillikas stood up for the Finance Minister, Michalis Sarris, on Thursday, after the strong criticisms against the latter for withdrawing from the ECOFIN meeting in Brussels.

Mr. Lillikas said that Mr. Sarris left earlier because he wanted to catch up his flight and be present to the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, something that “is not unusual”.

Mr. Lillikas said that the Minister supported the Cyprus’ stance for the value-added tax. “Cyprus reserved its right to examine the new proposal submitted by the European Commission and will express its opinion on Friday. It’s been a long time now that ECOFIN has talks on the changes that the Commission has recommended for the VAT on certain products”, he concluded.
