DP World Limassol, operator of the Multi-Purpose and the Cruise Terminals of the Limassol port, reiterates its ongoing commitment to boost the country’s cruise tourism sector.

In a press release on the occasion of World Tourism Day, DP World Limassol points out that throughout the years, tourism has been a major lifeline and a leading employer for communities across Cyprus, keeping their economies afloat.

"Every year, the World Tourism Day is celebrated with festivities led by the United Nations’ World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This year’s theme “Tourism and Rural Development” celebrates the sector’s unique ability to drive economic development and provide opportunities in rural communities. DP World Limassol’s vision is closely aligned with this theme, as it aims to establish the Limassol port as a regional cruise hub and a major trading channel, thereby driving growth across the entire country", the press release adds.

DP World Limassol’s CEO, Nawaf Abdulla pointed out that this year’s World Tourism Day comes at a critical moment, as countries around the globe are making an effort to drive economic recovery amid the Covid-19 pandemic. He added that given that Cyprus is a country highly dependent on international tourism, it is important to be well-prepared ahead of the next season.

"Focusing on attracting niche tourism markets and developing alternative forms of tourism, such as agrotourism, will be key in our efforts,” he said.

Abdulla went on to say that Cyprus is in the unique position of being able to offer large- and small-ship cruises, which call at ports in close proximity to vibrant rural communities with a rich culture and historically significant heritage sites.

"The shore excursions offered by cruise lines, help tourists discover places they wouldn’t know about otherwise, boosting the economies of mountain and rural communities. We believe that by forging alliances with neighboring countries, the Limassol port can emerge as a leading cruise destination, ensuring multiple benefits for both urban and rural areas”, he added.
