Transport Minister notes need to utilize innovative technologies

Cypriot Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Vassiliki Anastasiadou has pointed out the need to utilize innovative technologies to reduce commuting time and greenhouse emissions, noting that with further infrastructure for alternative fuel these technologies could contribute to meeting the long-term goals of the EU.

Anastasiadou was speaking at the EU Transport Ministers’ Informal Council on Wednesday in Bucharest, which discussed the future of EU transport, with emphasis on maximising investments in the transport sector, using new technologies to better utilize transport systems, and the use of alternative fuel with an aim to reduce the impact on the environment, including carbon dioxide emissions.

The Cypriot Minister said European transport infrastructure could not constitute a viable, effective, efficient, environmentally-friendly, safe and user-friendly system in itself, noting that innovative technologies should be utilized. She added that these systems could reduce commuting time and greenhouse emissions, which with further infrastructure for alternative fuel could contribute to meeting the long-term goals of the EU.

Referring to road safety, Anastasiadou welcomed actions which have significantly reduced the number of accidents over the past few years, noting however the need for further measures, taking into consideration technological innovation.
