CSE in emerging markets?(1)

16/06/2004 14:20
The Financial Times are considering including the Cyprus Stock Exchange in the emerging markets, CSE Council Chairman, Akis Cleanthous said on Wednesday, stressing that this does not “automatically” ensure the attraction of foreign institutional capital. “For the attraction of institutional capital, a stock exchange must provide institutional opportunities and prospects and this depends on its listed companies and the products they offer”, Mr. Cleanthous noted.

In his attempt to emphasize the importance of including the CSE in the emerging markets – which will give Cyprus an international repute and credibility – Mr. Cleanthous appealed the government and the Parliament to hasten the approval of the bill on the operation of the three new markets and the new institutional framework of the CSE.

StockWatch sources reveal that the CSE Council in agreement with the Finance Ministry is struggling so that the operation of the new markets and the institutional framework be approved in October or at least before the end of 2004.

The statements of Mr. Cleanthous were made within the framework of the press conference of the CSE Council on the importance of the Strategic Plan and the Development Programs.
