The Cyprus government considers licensing casinos in the Republic of Cyprus to limit the frequent visits of Greek Cypriots in Turkish Cypriot casinos, the Commerce Minister, Giorgos Lillikas said on Tuesday.

Mr. Lillikas has expressed government’s thoughts to proceed to the opening of a casino in the country to improve its tourist product. “Should a political decision is taken, we will open a casino, which will be governed by strict international specifications”, the Minister noted.

Invited to comment on whether Cypriots will have the right to visit the casino, Mr. Lillikas reiterated that at the present stage the opening of a casino is merely a thought, but should this is decided, the government will take the proper measures to prevent the social problems to arise.

As regards to the expulsion of the Israeli gamblers from the Republic, Mr. Lillikas said that the government is consistently applying the regulations of the state, according to which no one is entitled to cross into the occupied areas of northern Cyprus and stay overnight.
