T. Klerides: 13% decline in tourism for the ten-month period after 11/9/2001

The economy of Cyprus – that depends mostly on tourism, air transport manufacturing and insurance – has been widely affected by the terrorist attack on September 11. As a result of this act, the country’s growth rate has considerably reduced.

Despite the fact that tourism’s contribution to GNP reaches 25%, within the ten-month period after September 2001, tourist arrivals in Cyprus have significantly fallen by 13.6%.

These findings were announced yesterday by the Minister of Finance, Takis Klerides, in the framework of the annual Conference of Commonwealth Ministers of Finance that took place in London.

The Minister of Finance also referred to Cyprus main objective to harmonize its economy with the European Union. Finally, Mr. Klerides highlighted the consequences of the attack on September 11 in industries, air transport, insurance and tourism in Cyprus and Commonwealth.
