Arrivals down for October

The Statistical Service announced that in October 2001 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached 332.452 recording a decrease of 14,0% compared to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-October 2001 arrivals of travellers reached 3.294.630 compared to 3.201.370 in the corresponding period of 2000, recording an increase of 2,9%.

Arrivals of tourists reached 269.744 in October 2001 compared to 300.597 in the corresponding month last year, recording a decrease of 10,3%. For the period January-October 2001 arrivals of tourists reached 2.514.391 compared to 2.458.982 in the corresponding period of 2000, i.e. an increase of 2,3%.

The main countries of tourist arrivals in October 2001 were the United Kingdom with 55,9%, Germany with 8,6%, Sweden with 6,2%, Switzerland with 4,5%, Russia with 3,2%, Finland with 2,8% and Norway with 2,7%. The overwhelming majority, 84,2% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.

In October 2001, 44.655 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to 43.212 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-October 2001, 606.821 residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 513.089 in the corresponding period last year recording an increase of 18,3%.

In October 2001 the number of same-day visitors reached 15.660 of which 3.389 were same-day tourists and 12.271 excursionists. Long-term immigrants numbered 1.715 and short-term immigrants 319.
