Speaking in London at the end of the World Travel Market this week, Trade, Industry & Commerce Minister Nicos Rolandis stated that a decline of tourists from Britain is expected for 2002 as a result of the events of 11 September in the USA which have affected the travel industry worldwide.
Tourist arrivals from the UK are expected to be down by around 20%, equalling 10% of total arrivals, some 270.000 tourists. Revenue lost is anticipated to be in the region of CYP 140 million, 2.8% of Cyprus’ gross domestic product. Tourist arrivals from France, Belgium and Holland are expected to show a similar reduction. Arrivals from Ireland, Russia, Greece and Israel are expected to be down by around 5%.
Mr. Rolandis stated that tourism is the lifeline of Cyprus’ economy and the government is making every effort to ensure the country’s promotion as a safe destination.
