Increased tourism for 2001 despite 11 September events

The overall picture of tourism for 2001 for Cyprus, following events of the 11 September 2001, is much better than had been anticipated, with income from tourism showing an increase of 7%, an increase of around 0.4% compared to 2000.

Income from tourism showed a substantial increase to CYP 1.277.000 with arrivals reaching 2.696.732 in 2001. Numbers of arrivals have increased steadily with an increase of 29% since 1997 and income showing an increase of 51.5% over the said five year period.

Figures on tourism endorse the government’s policy for strengthening the country image as a tourist destination through infrastructure projects and aiming towards increasing the number of arrivals and maximizing revenues.
