Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Tourism Savvas Perdios attended the 66th Session of the European Commission of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which was held in Athens, on 2-4 June.

Recent developments in the touristic sector, as well as the ways of handling the challenges of the pandemic were the central issues of the meeting’s agenda.

During his speech, Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Tourism highlighted the parameters that could contribute to the recovery of the tourism sector, both in Cyprus and in other destinations.

He also stressed that despite the official launch of the European Digital Green Certificate on 1 July, it has been given the impression that traveling is not allowed without it. As Perdios said, this impression is wrong, as travels can take place without the certificate, under certain conditions.

The example of Cyprus, which since 1 March has facilitated travel to and from the EU, verifies that this impression is wrong, Deputy Minister of Tourism of Cyprus noted, urging all members of the Organization to be clear in their public statements on this issue.

In addition, the Deputy Minister welcomed the launch of the UNWTO`s “Best Tourist Villages” program, saying that this program is fully in line with Cyprus` strategic plans and particularly with the “Colourful Villages of Cyprus” tourism certification standard, which will be launched in the coming days.
