Things for tourism in 2011 are very encouraging, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides stated today, stressing that the government must focus on the winter period since the improvement of seasonality is a significant goal.

In his welcome speech during the Annual General Meeting of ACTA, Mr. Paschalides referred to the tourism in 2011, the “remarkable course” of the Russian market and the increasing indications from the German market, while he emphasized that the messages from the UK “allow us to expect that 2011 will be a year of overturning”.

“We must all focus on the winter period, since the improvement of seasonality is a significant goal for us. Certain actions on the issue go well”, he said.

“The significant measures that were decided recently in the Presidential Palace so as to improve the accessibility in Cyprus throughout the year may contribute to achieve our goal: to increase tourist arrivals during winter”, he noted.

Mr. Paschalides said that the efforts must be constant in such a competitive and sensitive sector, while threats never end. “We are all witnesses of a dramatic change of things in the sector from one day to another, the increase in competition and the change of the tourists’ profile, who have become more demanding and well-informed”, he said.

“Therefore, we have no other choice but to give our best, each one separately and altogether, so as to make our vision true”, he added.

He ensured that tourism is in the centre of the government’s and the Ministry’s attention.

The Minister also referred to the new advertising spot of Cyprus “Cyprus in your heart”, which is expected to make it even more attractive and coveted.

“A significant progress has been observed in the goals for the development of Conference Tourism with the improvement of the Nicosia Conference Centre, the Shipping Tourism with the construction of the Limassol marina that is in progress and the Golf Tourism with four golf courts operating normally and two more in Larnaca and Paphos being underway. The developments are also important in the sectors of Sports Tourism, Culture Tourism and Medical Tourism as well as other forms of tourism”, he stressed.

In relation to quality, Mr. Paschalides referred to the incentives that have been given for the improvement of significant aspects of the tourist product, such as the leisure centres and the hotels.

Finally, he said that Cyprus was severely hit by the liquidation of Eurocypria and the government did its best – under the circumstances – to restrict the negative impacts on the island’s tourism.
