Tourism: May arrivals drop 18.5%

Government’s expectations that tourist arrivals for May would soar after the end of the Iraqi war have been proved wrong, as there has been a decrease of 18.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2002.

According to CYSTAT preliminary data, tourist arrivals for May totaled 227,413 against 279,070 in May 2002. This drop compares negatively with the smaller decline in tourist arrivals for April (compared to April 2002), which did not exceed 6%.

Similarly, tourist revenues for May are expected to show losses. It is noted that the decline in revenues for April 2003 stood at 13%, with the total income for the month amounting to CYP 67 million compared to CYP 77 million in April 2002.

According to CYSTAT technocrats, tourist arrivals for the first five months of 2003 totaled 626,441 against 724,193 in the corresponding period of 2002 (-13.5%).
