Arrivals of tourists reached 450.495 in May 2018 compared to 418.732 in May 2017, recording an increase of 7.6%, according to the results of the Passengers Survey published today by the Statistical Service.
A press release issued by the Statistical Service says that in May 2018 a new record was set. May 2018 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month.
For the period of January – May 2018 arrivals of tourists totaled 1.134.076 compared to 990.756 in the corresponding period of 2017, recording an increase of 14.5% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first five months of the year.
Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom increased by 3.8% in May 2018 compared to May 2017 while an increase of 2.9% was recorded for tourists from Germany. Increases were also recorded from other important tourist markets, such as Greece (13.2%) and Poland (90.6%). Contrary to that, a decrease of 7.9% in tourist arrivals from Russia, 0.2% decrease from Sweden and 3.7% decrease from Israel were recorded.
The United Kingdom is the main source of tourism for Cyprus for May 2018, with a proportion of 35.7% of total arrivals, while tourists from Russia comprise 22.1% of total arrivals, from Germany 4.8%, from Sweden 4.5% and from Israel 4.4%.
For 85.7% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in May 2018 was holidays, for 8.1% visit to friends and relatives and for 6.1% business.
