Banks prepare for "battle"

26/05/2015 07:14
Employees and managements of the banks are preparing for a battle, without excluding an escalation of the dispute.

The bank employees are trying to strengthen their negotiating position with the dual tactic of preparing for a conflict with Hellenic Bank and of refraining from negotiations with Bank of Cyprus.

At the same time, the managements are examining their next steps in view of the latest unexpected developments.

In the case of Hellenic Bank, the dispute is climaxing. The trade union intensified the pressure maintaining abstinence from any overtime employment and turning to the Labour Ministry to resolve the dispute in recruitments.

Meanwhile, ETYK wants to strengthen its negotiating position as today it seeks authorization from the provincial assemblies of the employees in HB, to be able to activate the right to take proactive measures at any time.

Meanwhile, ETYK seems to have put in the “fridge"” the talks it had with Bank of Cyprus in the past two months, at either a formal or an informal level.

The trade union side had canceled the scheduled for last Friday official meeting with the negotiating team of Bank of Cyprus in the context of the renewal of the collective agreement that expired on 31 December last year, reacting to the written message of the Chairman of the Staff and Remunerations Committee of BOCY Michalis Spanos.

ETYK accused the administration of Bank of Cyprus for trying, through the message, to eliminate the pay scales, increments (annual, for diplomas, due to duties etc.) increases, COLA, promotions and reduction of contribution to the provident fund and drastically differentiate the working hours.

One of the Board members of ETYK and spokesperson of the trade union Christos Konomis told StockWatch that no new meeting with Bank of Cyprus has been fixed as all aspects emerging from the message of the bank management to the staff are examined.

Time is not pressing the trade union side, which has no financial claims, he noted.

The first mediation meeting to lift the labour dispute will be held today at the Labour Ministry. ETYK accuses Hellenic Bank for violating the provisions of the collective agreement related to staff recruitment issues from outside the bank.

The appeal to the Labour Ministry is based on the industrial relations code, which is questioned by the employers.

The trade union claims that HB hired five people to fill managerial positions without prior deliberation of the two sides.

The Bank's management believes that the filling of managerial positions is a privilege of the employers’ side.

The mediation service of the Labour Ministry is called to give the answer.

Next Friday the Board of Directors of Bank of Cyprus will meet to assess, among others, the status of the labour relations with ETYK and possibly to determine its own tactics.

One of the issues that the Bank management feels strongly about is the extension of the opening hours to serve customers until 16:30.

This request was supported by the plenary of the Board of the banks association.

Tomorrow's AGM by Hellenic Bank may also deal with the dispute.
