ETYK brings up rights of 1989

With the agreement signed 26 years ago with the former administration of the Hellenic Bank in hand, the bank workers’ union will attend a meeting with the management of the Bank today, while questioning the intervention of the attorney general's office in the matter.

Today's meeting is expected to take place in a climate of mistrust and relative intensity as ETYK questions the opinion of the prosecutor in the matter of hiring managers without the union’s approval. The prosecutor’s opinion, which has been orally reported to both sides, states that hiring managers is an issue of the employer.

ETYK cites an agreement signed in March 1989, by the then executive director of the Bank Panos Galanos and Loizos Chatzikosti.

The agreement states that for future recruitment of specialized personnel "ETYK ‘s opinion will be required first”.

ETYK also cites as evidence a letter by the competent management of the Hellenic Bank which at the end of 2014, called for the union’s approval to extent a fixed-term contract for an official whose position is not specified.

The union issued a circular to the staff yesterday in which it sets the tone of intent, insisting on the agreement, and implying a possible escalation of measures implemented since last week for abstention from overtime working.

The labor crisis at the Hellenic Bank started a few months ago as the management insists on changing working conditions for employees, going further from what the union has agreed with the other banks. The innovation promoted by the Dutch CEO of the Bank, Bert Pijls, is to serve the tens of thousands of customers on Saturday as well.

In its circular, ETYK wonders among other things, how relevant is the legal department to the private sector’s labor issues and wonders which "invisible hand chose it and why."

The union criticizes the legal service for not inviting the union’s side to provide its views or give details.

It also criticizes the fact that it has not received the prosecutor’s opinion and criticizes those (including the media) who proceeded to interpretations without its content being known.

ETYK invites the employers' side to honor the agreement which as ETYK says, they themselves have signed.

ETYK also criticizes the labor ministry and asks why it avoids to position itself in terms of the agreement with the Hellenic Bank for hiring non-bankers directly to organic posts and on whether the management is following the laid down procedures.

The union says that the measure of abstinence from overtime working is not suspended and that the labor dispute remains while even suggesting, that there is a possibility of escalating measures.

"The organization may seek a resolution of the dispute by any means or measures it deems appropriate or necessary," the union notes.

However, the Hellenic Bank with a circular to the staff tried to lower tones.

The Hellenic Bank intends to hire additional staff to work on Saturdays. It also proposes changes to the terms of granting loans to staff, which are now offered on rates lower than the bank’s cost of lending.
