Value of bounced cheques rises slightly in 2021

The value of bounced cheques issued in 2021 rose to €0.93 million compared with €0.74 in 2020, whereas the number of bounced cheques dropped to 363 compared with 454 the year before.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus, the value of cheques issued in December 2021 and included in the CBC’s preliminary Central Information Register (CIR) jumped significantly to €250,506 more than doubling the value of bounced cheques issued in the previous month (€97,696) and more than quadruple the respective amount of December 2020 (51,2321).

A total of 99 legal persons and 95 natural persons were included in the preliminary CIR in 2021 compared with 147 and 129 respectively the year before, the CBC said.

Legal persons registered in the CIR in 2021 amounted to 58 from 66 in 2020, whereas registration of natural persons rose to 50 in 2021 from 40 in 2020. Furthermore 71 persons that controlled legal entities were registered in the CIR in 2021 with total registrations for 2021 amounting to 179 compared with 324 the year before, the CBC added.
