A bill proposal seeking to regulate tourist accommodation booked on sites such as Airbnb will be soon tabled for discussion before the plenary of the House of Representatives as the debate at the parliamentary tourism committee has been almost concluded.

Deputy Minister for Tourism Savvas Perdios expressed his contentment over the development, in statements to the press after Tuesday’s session of the committee, noting that the bill proposal would contribute to the upgrading of Cyprus’ tourist product.

“Once every individual will be able to renovate and rent their property, new horizons will open up, especially for agritourism”, he said.

Perdios noted that a large percentage of tourist arrivals come via tour operators and choose to stay in hotels that meet very strict quality criteria. But referring to the rental of individual self-catering units, the Deputy Minister pointed out that this type of tourism was an opportunity to attract special forms of tourism and tourists from new markets such as France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Scandinavia.
