Deputy Tourism Minister briefed parliamentary committee on 2021 action plan

20/01/2021 06:06

Cyprus’ Deputy Tourism Minister Savvas Perdios presented on Tuesday before the parliamentary Committee on Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism the plans concerning Cyprus’ new tourist product, noting that there are no expectations for a tourist flow during the first months of 2021.

In a statement after the Committee’s meeting, Perdios noted that following a briefing of the Cabinet last week he also briefed the parliament about this year’s action plan of the Deputy Tourism Ministry, in the framework of the implementation of the National Tourism Strategy.

He recalled that this year’s plan comprises three pillars: advertising and marketing, upgrading of infrastructure focusing on specific forms of tourism, and improvement of the competitiveness of urban and mountain areas.

Moreover, Perdios said that a lot of work has been done with regard to the laws regulating issues related to the tourist product. He also said that new types of tourism have been added to the tourist product as glamping, noting that there is a significant interest in Cyprus.

He noted that according to the Council of Ministers decision the skies will open as of March 1st, which means that passengers from 56 countries will be able to visit Cyprus without being quarantined for 14 days, unless they are found positive for COVID-19 upon their arrival.

He explained that the countries will be separated in three categories. Passengers from countries included in the green category will not need to undergo a test, passengers from countries in the orange category will have to take the test before travelling to Cyprus and passengers from countries included in the red category should take the test before departing for Cyprus as well as upon their arrival to the island.

Responding to a question, Perdios said it is too early for estimations about tourism as all countries are amid the second of the third wave of the pandemic and it will be difficult for someone to travel today or in February and March.
