Hoteliers looking for rescue

Cyprus as tourist destination suffers a decline in British reservations by 32% for the Larnaca Airport and 24% for the Paphos Airport, as a result of the global economic crisis and the delays in the enforcement of the strategic plan for tourism. This is what PASYXE General Manager told the House Commerce Committee today, describing the dark future of tourism.

“We blame all of us who watch for seven years now our tourist product falling”, Mr. Ioannides said and urged the MPs to push the government in order to take measures. “Already, the hoteliers are highly pressed by the foreign tour operators to reduce prices in the hotel packages. Prices have dropped from 20 to 25%. The hoteliers cannot bear the burden alone”, he concluded.

Similarly, CTO Chairman, Panos Egglezos urged the government to support the hotel industry, using as an example the discounts in the price of electricity, the VAT cut, the elimination of the stay tax to the local administration and measures so that the banks extend the periods of loan payments.

Mr. Egglezos supported that the CTO efforts to avoid flight cancellations to the island during summer are huge. “There is a delay in the reservations by the foreign tourist agents. The key lies to the hoteliers who must reduce prices. It is the only solution at the current stage”, he said.

With reference to the air fares, the airlines managed to achieve lower prices.

At the same time, Mr. Egglezos criticized the state for the delay in the construction of big tourist projects. “Sea and sun are not enough for tourists anymore”, he concluded.
