Adamos Adamou chosen as new House President

The majority of parliamentary parties decided Friday to support the candidacy of AKEL MP Adamos Adamou for the post of President of the Cyprus Parliament, after the resignation of Demetris Syllouris in the aftermath of an Al Jazeera report for a passport – for – sale scandal.

The parties DISY, AKEL, DIKO, EDEK, Citizens` Alliance, Solidarity and Movement of Ecologists — Citizens` Cooperation decided to support the joint candidacy of MP Adamos Adamos, who will lead the Parliament until the upcoming elections in May. National Popular Front announced that it will abstain from the process.

It was announced that the date of convening the Plenary Session of the Parliament for the election of the new President will be announced soon, after the proclamation of the two new Members of Parliament.

In his first statement after the decision, Adamou said that “lot of hard work awaits us, given the collapse of the credibility and dignity of the House of Representatives after the latest events”.

He thanked the parties that supported his candidacy, saying that there is no doubt that everyone would rise to the occasion, so as the House of Representative will come to a position to truly belong to the civil society.

He also said that he had no doubt that all political parties will work hard to that end.

Adamos Adamou is expected to be elected by the Plenary Session of the Parliament as the twelfth President of the Cypriot Parliament. He was born in Limassol on 30 October 1950. He is married to Phaedra Lerni and has three sons and one daughter.

He studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with specialisation in Pathology (Athens) and Internal Medicine-Oncology (Athens and United States of America). He works as a consultant medical oncologist. He speaks Greek and English.

He was Member of the Cyprus Parliament from 2003 to 2004 and he was then elected as Member of the European Parliament (Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left) between 2004-2009.

He is Member of the Parliament of AKEL-Left-New Forces since 2011.

He was member (1996-2016) and president (2016- ) of the board of the Cyprus Anti-cancer Society, President of the National Committee on Cancer Strategy (2010-2015) and member of the board and president of the Scientific Committee and the Center of the study of haematological malignancies (KEMAK) of the Karaiskakio Foundation.
