Adamos Adamou elected 12th President of the House of Representatives

Left-wing MP Adamos Adamou was elected unrivaled 12th President of the House of Representatives on Friday, with the votes of the majority of MPs, except those of ELAM.

In favour were 53 MPs. There were two abstentions, those of the ELAM MPs.

His candidacy was a joint proposal from all parties except ELAM. General Secretary of the left wing AKEL party Antros Kyprianou proposed Adamou during the plenary session.

After his election, Adamou took the floor saying that it is time "for us all to take responsibility and with a responsible attitude, close to the citizens, to try and gain our credibility and dignity which we have lost."

In a statement before Adamou`s election, President of DISY ruling right wing party Averof Neofytou said that there was a spirit of consensus as regards Adamou`s candidacy and expressed the wish that with consensus they will be able to address all the small and big challenges that are before us.

Democratic Party  President Nicholas Papadopoulos said that in a period when the credibility of the Parliament has been shaken, the candidacy of Adamou is a choice of consensus in this crucial time, while President of the EDEK Socialdemocratic party, Marinos Sizopoulos, said that the party supports Adamou in these difficult times and said that he is the person to restore the image of the Parliament.

Yiorgos Lillikas, President of the Citizens` Alliance said he expects that the ethos that characterizes Adamou will contribute to restoring the credibility of the Parliament, while Solidarity MP Michalis Giorgallas said that consensus is the least that political forces can demonstrate at these crucial times.

Charalampos Theopemptou, President of the Cyprus Greens - Citizens`s Cooperation said that Adamou enjoys his party`s trust and that they will support him in his difficult task. He reiterated the request of his party for the publication of the Giorkatzis list, according to the decision of the Parliament.

ELAM President  Christos Christou said that his party did not support the candidacy of Adamou because the two conditions they set were not met, namely immediate publication of the Giorkatzis list and the release of Adamou from his parliamentary group.

MP Aggelos Votsis from the Cooperation of Democratic Forces said that they proposed Adamou for his ethos, hard work and willingness for the widest possible consensus.

Idependent MP Anna Theologou expressed her support to Adamou describing him as a decent politician.

During Friday’s session of the plenary, new MPs Yiannakis Gavriel of AKEL and Roula Georgiades of the Solidarity Movement were sworn in.

Adamou was born in Limassol in 1950. He studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with specialisation in Pathology and Internal Medicine-Oncology (Athens and United States of America).

He is a consultant medical oncologist.

He speaks Greek and English. He is married to Fedra Lerni and has four children.

He served as MP at the House of Representatives in 2003 with the AKEL left wing party. In 2004 he was elected as MEP and served at the European Parliament between 2004 - 2009 being member of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left. In 2011 he was re-elected MP with AKEL.
