Airports BOT Bill Postponed

10/07/2001 09:26
Following a demonstration outside the House of Parliament yesterday by the trade unions PEO, SEK and PASYDY, the decision concerning the bill on the self-financing method (Build-Operate-Transfer) for Cyprus' airports has been postponed until October.

The proposal for postponement came from the left wing party AKEL and was supported by both DHKO and KISOS. The postponement motion aims to allow further examination and discussions on the issue between the government and trade unions. The latter support that the government should proceed with funding the reconstruction of the airports which are a profitable source of revenue for the state, opposing the transfer of the management of airports to an investor for a number of years. Further, the unions claim that increase of levies will provide the necessary funds for reconstruction of the airports by the state.

Minister of Communications & Works Averof Neophytou whose Ministry submitted the bill, speaking to reporters after the demonstration stated that he is confident the bill will be eventually approved for the benefit of the country.
