DISY President: Salary freezing to safeguard achievements

25/11/2011 11:38
In his first public statement on the economy, DISY President, Nicos Anastasiades appealed for collective decisions so that the economy deals with the deadlock it is in.

Speaking within the framework of a press conference, Mr. Anastasiades revealed that he will ask for a meeting with the President of the Republic in the presence of the Finance Minister and the Head of the Economic Team of his party and referring to the freezing of the salaries, he said:

“The decisions we are called to take in the next few days will not be easy or pleasant. But they are necessary. Nor is it our intention to target anyone, especially the employees. We have to understand, however, that the freezing of the salaries and benefits in the public sector, for example, not only will undermine the achievements but it will safeguard them. Otherwise, we will be forced to take more painful decisions, imposed by others”, he said and noted:

“Today, I will not speak as a leader of the opposition searching for the opportunity to criticize the government. I will speak as a leader of a responsible party that is fully aware of the critical condition of the Cyprus economy. A party that is ready to undertake its responsibilities and be burdened the cost. A party that understands that the reliable planning and the bold decisions are now a matter of national survival. Today it is not the time for estimates or ascertainments. Nor the time to see who was right and who was wrong. It is a time of decisions to avoid the disastrous consequences”, he emphasized.

“More than ever, we must realize that the laicism, the ideological obsessions and the sounding slogans may not be the answer to the crisis and can not be placed under the economic reality. And this applies to everyone, either they belong to the government or the parties, or in organized groups or trade unions”.

Mr. Anastasiades expressed his party’s readiness to discuss any other reliable proposal and stressed:

“Our goal, however, should be clear. We need to tidy up a wasteful and inefficient state. A state that in a time of recession continues to spend, pushing deficits and debts up. This irresponsible course urgently needs to be corrected, starting from the state budget for 2012”.

“At the same time we need to give strong and decisive impetus to growth; with specific incentives, by encouraging and not burdening the productive sectors of the economy and via cooperation between private and public sector. Only this will reverse unemployment and will boost the state revenues in a sustainable way”.

The primary responsibility for those decisions by default lies to the government, he said.

“But it is our belief that those critical moments require national action and cooperation. In this context, I asked for a meeting with the President of the Republic, in the presence of Finance Minister and head of the economic team of DISY. This is the type of contacts I will pursue in the coming days”, he added.

“DISY, as the largest party of the country, as a force for political credibility and responsibility was and is still ready to support right decisions and bold steps to avoid the worst and to put Cyprus back on the track of growth. We send this clear message to all directions, both at home and abroad”, Mr. Anastasiades concluded.
