The society will be driven into the abyss if we fall in the terrible mistake to put politicians on trial said a moment ago, former President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, on the occasion of his withdrawal from the testimony process to the inquiry committee for the economy.

Speaking at a press conference immediately after his withdrawal, Mr. Christofias referred to the reasons for this move and read the full text of the document submitted to the inquiry committee.

In his initial statement, former President of the Republic warned that it would be terrible mistake to put politics and politicians on trial as this would lead society into the abyss and will become the headstone of democracy.

On the occasion of today's press conference, the Cypriot people will listen to our own version, he said.

"We worked very hard with our partners to tell the truth to the people of Cyprus and nothing but the truth, which for some will be bitter," he added.
He noted he did not refuse to testify to the inquiry committee and that he willingly responded to the invitation to testify the policies followed by the government and which, as claimed were undermined by others.

He criticized the chairman of the inquiry committee, Giorgos Pikis for not allowing him read the written statement so as to draw the right conclusions in relation to the economic problems that plague the country.

He also expressed discontent about the fact that he was not given more time to get prepared, a request which was submitted to the inquiry committee and characterized the decision the former CB Governor Athanasios Orphanides to testify after him and before President Anastasiades as unethical.

President Christofias noted that the former President of the Republic was as if he was on trial.
