House President Annita Demetriou arrived Monday in Berlin for a working visit during which she will meet with Bundestag Chair Bärbel Bas and other officials. The talks will cover energy, Ukrainian crisis, food crisis, environment, the Cyprus issue and Turkish provocations.

In statements upon arrival, she said that she will discuss issues related to cooperation of the EU member states in light of the continuing crisis in Ukraine and all the effects, adding that Germany is a country that plays a decisive role in EU affairs.

Asked if Cyprus could play a role in energy matters, she said yes, adding that we are going to the meeting well prepared as they (German officials) want to be briefed about Cyprus’ positions.

Demetriou said that Cyprus could play a role and have a significant engagement in EU’s energy upgrade in order to deal with current challenges.

She said that she will brief her interlocutors about Cyprus’ agreements and all information related to energy.

Demetriou also said that she will brief them on Turkish provocations in the Cyprus exclusive economic zone and on the ground in Varosha.

She added that she will inform them on Greek Cypriot positions for the resumption of the peace talks and the fact that Turkey puts forward the position for a two-state solution that is unacceptable and not in accordance with UN resolutions. A position, she added, that EU does not accept either.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
