Another three COVID-19 patients die in Cyprus, 292 new confirmed cases

Another three COVID-19 patients died in Cyprus, authorities announced on Wednesday, while 292 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed, after conducting 9,984 tests.

The total number of patients who lost their lives with the final cause of their death being COVID-19 is now 52, while the total number of cases has reached 11,175.

The three people who died, with the final cause of their death being COVID-19, are a 83-year-old woman with health problems who was treated in Limassol General Hospital, a 62-year-old man with health problems, who was treated in Nicosia General Hospital Intensive Care Unit and an 84-year-old man who also had health problems and was treated in Famagusta General Hospital, which is the COVID-19 Reference Hospital.

According to the Health Ministry press release, 35 men (67%) and 17 women (33%) have lost their lives due to COVID-19. The average age of those who passed away is 75 years old.

Out of the 9,984 tests, 2,924 were carried out with the PCR method from which 193 were positive. Eighty-eight were detected after testing 564 samples taken in the framework of tracing the contacts of already confirmed cases and 59 out of 1,142 samples taken at the private initiative.

Out of 344 samples taken by the General Hospitals Microbiological Labs 27 were positive for COVID-19, while two cases were confirmed out of 249 samples taken after referrals by Personal Doctors and checks carried out for special groups of the population through public health centres.

One person was tested positive for COVID-19 at Larnaca district in the framework of checks carried out for employees who travel to Limassol and Paphos, while four cases were detected out of 144 samples taken from pupils, teachers and other school staff.  Twelve individuals tested positive for COVID-19 out of 16 tested in the framework of checking people who are hosted in premises accommodating immigrants.

Ninety-nine of the positive PCR tests concerned people who already had antigen rapid tests with a positive result. Four positive rapid tests were not confirmed through the PCR tests.

No cases were detected after 317 tests were carried out for passengers and people who have been repatriated and 61 people living in Kato Pyrgos Tyllirias, and from 86 tests done on people who are working or staying in homes for the elders and other facilities.

Six thousand sixty tests were antigen rapid tests out of which 108 individuals were found to be positive for COVID-19.

A total of 124 COVID-19 patients are now treated in hospitals. Sixty four of them are treated in Famagusta General Hospital (four in the Increased Care Unit and 60 in the COVID-19 ward), 24 in Nicosia General Hospital (14 in the Intensive Care Unit and 10 in the COVID-19 ward), 24 in Limassol General Hospital (COVID-19 ward), five in Athalassa Hospital (COVID-19 ward) and seven in Makario Hospital (COVID-19 ward).
