Authorities announced eight deaths and 2,499 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

Cypriot health authorities announced Wednesday eight new deaths due to COVID-19 and 2,499 new cases, while 224 patients are being treated in public hospitals.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, patients treated in serious conditions in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units were 75. A percentage of 75% of the COVID-19 patients who are currently in hospitals have not been vaccinated.

A total of 92,276 tests were carried out, with the daily positivity rate rising to 2.71%.

The total number of people who have lost their lives of COVID-19 is now 724, while the number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic reached 243,818.

The eight people who have died are a 72 -year- old man, who passed away on January 23 in Nicosia General Hospital, an 88- year- old woman who passed away on January 25 in Limassol General Hospital, a 91 -year- old man who lost his life on January 25 in Limassol General Hospital, an 83 -year- old woman who lost her life on January 26 in Larnaka General Hospital, an 86-year- old man who died on January 26 in Ammochostos General Hospital, an 85-year- old woman who died on January 26 in Nicosia General Hospital, an 81 -year- old woman who passed away on January 26 in Ammochostos General Hospital and a 64 -year- old woman who lost her life on January 26 in Nicosia General Hospital.
 
The total number of people who died since the beginning of the pandemic is now 724, of whom 450 or 62.2% are men and 274 or 37.8% are women, with a median age of 76.2 years.
 
Of the 75 patients in serious condition, 34 are intubated, 4 are in Intensive Treatment Units but are not connected to a ventilator and 37 patients are in Increased Care Units.
 
According to the Ministry, the 2,499 new COVID cases were detected following 92,276 tests, of which 5,190 were PCR tests and 87,086 rapid antigen tests.
 
A total of 64 cases were detected from 411 samples taken in the context of contact tracing, 21 new cases were diagnosed from 921 tests done at the airports, 360 new infections were detected from 3,343 tests carried out on private initiative, 45 new infections were diagnosed from 279 samples taken by General Hospitals’ Microbiology Labs, 1,158 new cases were detected after 47,918 rapid tests were carried out in private labs and pharmacies, 837 new cases were diagnosed after 39,168 tests carried out in the context of the Ministry of Health rapid test programme, while 14 new infections were diagnosed from 234 samples taken in the context of GP referrals.
