COVID-19 case fatality risk at 0.6%

COVID-19 case fatality risk stands at 0.6%, while among cases alive 87.4% have recovered, the National Surveillance Report as of 09/03/2021 on the disease which was released on Friday shows. According to the data in the last 14 days 99% of cases were locally acquired. Limassol is by far the most affected district with a share of 65% of cases reported during that period, while out of 171 people in hospital, 70.8% of them are from the district.

In particular, as of March 9th, 2021, a total of 36,786 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed, of which 236 died due to COVID-19 (case fatality risk: 0.6%).

According to the report, in the last 14 days (24 February - 09 March, 2021), 3,528 cases have been diagnosed. The 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate of COVID-19 (per 100,000 population), a measure which reflects the number of active COVID-19 cases in the population (prevalence), is 397.3 per 100,000 population.

The median age was 37 years (Interquartile range - IQR: 23-52 years); 53.1% were females (1,875), 46.7% males (1,646), and for seven cases (0.2%) information is not currently available.

By place of exposure: 1% (35) were imported and 99% (3,493) were locally-acquired.

As of March 11th, 2021, 171 people were still hospitalized (currently notified). The median age of patients still hospitalized as of March 11th, 2021 (171, including those discharged on that day) is 65 years (IQR: 54-73 years), 59.1% (101) are males, and 70.8% (121) are from Limassol district. One hundred-twelve cases (66.7%) still hospitalised have comorbidities.

Out of 22 cases in intensive care units (ICU), who are currently notified, 18 were intubated. The median age of current ICU patients is 68 (IQR: 61-69) years and 18 (81.8%) are males. Eighteen (81.8%) patients currently in ICU have pre-existing conditions.

According to the report over the last 14 days, 39,725 RT PCR and 522,215 rapid antigen tests have been performed (4,473.5 RT PCR and 58,808 rapid antigen tests per 100,000 population).

Among 3,528 cases diagnosed since 24th of February, 2021, 53.1% were females (1,875), 46.7% males (1,646), and for seven cases (0.2%) information is not currently available.

By age group, cases included 717 infants, children and adolescents aged 0-19 years-old (20.3%), 2,250 adults aged 20-59 years (63.8%), 557 persons aged 60 years and older (15.8%), and for four cases (0.1%) information is not currently available. The median age of all cases diagnosed in the last 14 days is 37 years (IQR: 23-52 years). The median age of adult cases (≥ 18 years) is 42 years (IQR: 30-56 years).

Geographically, the report reads that among all cases diagnosed in the last 14 days, 2,292 (65%) were reported in Limassol district, 742 (21%) in Nicosia, 224 (6.4%) in Larnaka, 158 (4.5%) in Pafos, 59 (1.7%) in Famagusta, and 53 (1.5%) were reported either in the British bases or had a residence abroad, or information was not available.

In relation to the clinical features the report says that in the last 14 days (24 February - 09 March, 2021), 29.6% (1,044) reported no symptoms at diagnosis and 70.4% (2,484) reported at least one symptom.

At the same time, in the last 14 days (24 February - 09 March, 2021), 873 cases (24.7%) reported at least one comorbidity.

Among cases, 236 COVID-19 associated deaths were reported in the Republic of Cyprus until March 11th, 2021 (Case Fatality Risk - CFR: 0.6%). The COVID-19 associated mortality is 26.6 per 100,000 population.

In particular, deaths occurred in 156 men (66.1%) and 80 (33.9%) women; the median age of all COVID-19 associated deaths was 81 years (IQR: 73-87 years). By district of residence, deceased cases were 79 (33.5%) from Nicosia, 73 (30.9%) from Limassol, 42 (17.8%) from Larnaka, 18 (7.6%) from Pafos, 15 (6.4%) from Famagusta, and nine deaths (3.8%) occurred among cases reported either in the British bases or had a residence abroad, or information was not available.

The median time from date of sampling to death (due to COVID-19) was 13 days (IQR: 7-20 days).

Among cases, 288 deaths (all causes) were reported in the Republic of Cyprus until March 11th, 2021 (CFR: 0.8%).

The mortality (all-causes) for people with COVID-19 is 32.4 per 100,000 population.

Deaths occurred in 194 men (67.4%) and 94 (32.6%) women; the median age of all deaths was 81 years (IQR: 73-87 years). By district of residence, deceased cases were 93 (32.3%) from Limassol, 90 (31.2%) from Nicosia, 52 (18.1%) from Larnaka, 24 (8.3%) from Pafos, 17 (5.9%) from Famagusta, and 12 deaths (4.2%) occurred among cases reported either in the British bases or had a residence abroad, or information was not available.

The median time from date of sampling to death (all-causes) was 12 days (IQR: 6-20 days).

The report says that in total, 5.3% (1,933) of people with COVID-19 received hospital care, as of March 11th, 2021. The median age of hospitalized patients was 65 years (IQR: 52-76 years). Hospitalized cases were mainly males (1,121; 58%). The median age of patients still hospitalized as of March 11th, 2021 (171, including those discharged on that day) is 65 years (IQR: 54-73 years), 59.1% (101) are males, and 70.8% (121) are from Limassol district. One hundred-twelve cases (65.5%) still hospitalised have comorbidities.

Overall, 199 cases (10.3% of all hospitalized patients) have been admitted to ICU. The median age of patients ever admitted to ICU was 69 years (IQR: 62-76 years). ICU patients were mainly male (136; 68.3%). The overall median length of stay in ICU (for all ICU cases) was 14 days (IQR: 8-27 days).

As of March 11th, 2021, and based on records which rapidly evolve, 22 cases were still in ICU (including deaths / discharged on that day). The median age of current ICU patients is 68 (IQR: 61-69) years and 18 (81.8%) are males. Eighteen (81.8%) patients currently in ICU have pre-existing conditions.

The number of cases currently in ICU is 2.5 per 100,000 population (as of March 11th, 2021, including deaths/discharged on that day).

A total of 187 ICU patients (94% of all ICU patients) have been intubated - currently there are 18 patients intubated in ICU (including deaths/discharged/extubated on that day).

As of March 11th, 2021, among cases alive, 87.4% (31,916) of COVID-19 cases have recovered/released from isolation.
