Cyprus reports 5 deaths and 1,701 new COVID cases

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Friday the weekly COVID report (3-9 March), according to which 5 deaths occurred due to the virus and 1,701 new cases were detected. The positivity rate now stands at 2.87% and 44 patients are receiving treatment in hospital, of whom 9 are in serious condition.

The deceased are 3 men and 2 women aged between 49-96 years. Total deaths reached 1,335 and cases since the pandemic broke out rose to 652,386. Three patients are being treated in an ICU and another 6 are intubated. 

A total of 59,293 tests were carried out of which 1,542 were PCR and 141 cases were detected (positivity rate 9.14%). The rapid tests were 57,751 of which 1,560 came back positive (PR 2.7%). On private initiative 1,064 PCR were conducted and 74 cases were detected (PR 6.95%). A total of 32,131 rapid tests were done and 1,390 cases were reported (PR 4.33%).

Through the Ministry’s programmes a total of 25,620 rapid tests were carried out and 170 cases were detected while at testing points a total of 17,764 rapid tests were done and 131 came back positive (PR 0.74%).

In elementary schools no cases were detected from a total of 143 rapid tests carried out. The same applied in high schools, where a total of 442 rapid tests were carried out. In nursing homes 35 cases were detected from a total of 4,905 tests (PR 0.71%). In closed units 4 cases were detected in 2,366 rapid tests (PR 0.17%).
