Eight out of ten Cypriots consider their health status as good

Eight out of ten Cypriots consider their health status as good or very good, according to the European Health Interview Survey of 2019, published on Tuesday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

The Report provides statistical information related to the health status of the population, longstanding illnesses or longstanding health problems, accidents, physical conditions, personal care, emotional condition, health care services, smoking, alcohol consumption and other health related topics.

According to the main findings of the survey, 80.9% of the population aged 15 years and over consider their health status as good or very good, 14.2% fair and 4.9% bad or very bad.

The most frequent long-standing health problems are hypertension, hyperlipidemia (i.e. having high blood cholesterol), low back disorder or other chronic back defect, neck disorder or other chronic neck defect, arthrosis (arthritis excluded) and diabetes.

Moreover, 88.1% of the population aged 55 years and over is able to perform the main activities of daily living such as eating, sitting and getting up out of bed, dressing, bathing and using the toilet, without any difficulty.

During the past 12 months, 8.3% of the population was admitted in a hospital or clinic as an inpatient. Also, during the past 12 months, 67.6% of the population aged 15 years and over visited general practitioners or family doctors.

During the past 12 months, 64.6% of the population aged 15 years and over visited medical or surgical specialists.

During the past 12 months, 59.3% of the population visited a dentist or an orthodontist.

During the past 2 weeks, 37.2% of the population used prescribed medicines.

Among the population aged 15 years and over, the majority 74.5%, reported not smoking at all, 22.5% smoke daily and 3% smoke occasionally.
