More people at gatherings in Limassol, Health Ministry announces

12/08/2020 09:05

The Epidemiological Committee which convened yesterday under the Health Minister via videoconference, decided to allow 50 people instead of 10 at house and public gatherings in Limassol district, except places which offer food and beverages, but the measure will be reassessed next week based on the epidemiological data. The new measure will be in place once the decree is issued.

All other measures imposed in Limassol, following the spike in cases, and in the whole of the island are still in place until further notice.

The Committee also decided that the spread of the virus in the community seems to be in decline and the situation is  now better but there is no room for complacency.

The Committee and the Ministry call once again on the public to be extra vigilant, to practice self distancing and to take all other protective measures against the spread of the virus.

The videoconference evaluated the data in place following the decision to random test an additional 10,000 people and the Minister briefed the members on a recent study by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), on mass gatherings. They also discussed the update of protocols ahead of Fall and ways to manage the asymptomatic persons especially among the youth.

The members will come back with suggestions and final decisions are set to be taken in a fresh meeting next week.

The ECDC study raises concerns on mass gatherings such as festivals and concerts and the risks for the spread of COVID-19 especially because contact tracing would be extremely difficult.

The members of the epidemiological committee and the Minister agreed that citizens need to be alerted and to follow all the protocols and measures in their everyday lives as the road to finding a vaccine against the virus is long.
