One death due to Covid and 4,774 new cases on Wednesday

Cypriot health authorities on Wednesday reported one new death due to COVID-19 and 4,774 new cases, bringing the total tally of deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic to 933 and 26,377 respectively.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalisations remained unchanged to 182, while patients treated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units and high-dependency units rose to 25, from 21 the day before.

A total of 83,389 tests were carried out today, with the overall daily positivity rate amounting to 5.72% from 5.34% the day before.

According to the Ministry, the new fatality concerns a 746-year woman who passed away yesterday.

Furthermore, patients receiving treatment in public hospitals remained unchanged to 182, of whom 25 are being treated in serious condition. Of the patients in serious condition, 5 are intubated, one in Intensive Care Unit but not connected to a ventilator, and 15 patients are in Advanced Care Units, the Ministry added.

Data show that 54.95% of the patients treated in public hospitals have no vaccination history, while 15 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious are intubated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units.

According to the Ministry, PCR tests amounted to 3,528 detecting 462 positive cases with a positivity rate of 13.1%, while rapid antigen tests amounted to 79,861 after which 4,312 new infections were diagnosed, resulting to a positivity rate of 5.4%.

In the context of contact tracing, 393 PCR tests were carried out detecting 71 new cases with a positivity rate of 18.07%, while 113 new cases were diagnosed following 863 rapid antigen tests with a positivity rate of 13.09%.

As part of private initiative, 1,903 PCR tests were carried detecting 327 new cases (17.18%), whereas 35,485 rapid antigen tests were carried after which 2,520 new cases were diagnosed (7.01%).

In the context of the Ministry of Health’s testing programmes using rapid antigen tests, a total of 44,376 samples were taken detecting 1,792 new infections.

Following 23,346 tests carried out in the various testing sites, 1,434 new cases were diagnosed with a 6.14% positivity rate.

As part of testing in the education system, 10,789 tests were carried out high schools detecting 81 new cases with a positivity rate of 0.75%. Furthermore 4,894 rapid tests were carried out as part of the test-to-stay process, detecting 83 new cases (1.67%). Following 504 tests in special schools, 4 new cases were traced (0.79%).

In the context of testing in elderly homes, 1,308 samples were taken, detecting 67 positive cases (5.12%) and 10 new cases were detected following 2,582 carried out in closed structures (0.39), the Ministry added.
