One more death and two more COVID-19 confirmed cases announced Wednesday

One more death and two more confirmed cases of COVID-19 were announced on Wednesday by Cyprus authorities, after conducting 1,946 laboratory tests.
 
The patient, an 85-year-old woman with underlying conditions, succumbed at the ICU of Limassol General Hospital. The cause of death is attributed to coronavirus.

Dr. Leontios Kostrikis, member of the Scientific Committee on the pandemic said that one confirmed case came up from 155 tests done to contacts of already confirmed cases and  the other one from 383 tests on a private initiative.

No positive cases were located from 234 tests run by the Mucrobiological Labs of General Hospitals island wide, nor from 85 tests in the framework of the testing program for special groups done at public clinics.

Kostrikis said that 546 tests were done to employees in the retail business and construction sites and no positive case was detected. Moreover, 543  tests were made to repatriates with no positive case.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Cyprus is 905.

Kostrikis said that the figures of the last hours are satisfactory and enhance the positive picture of the last days. He said that we are in the middle of  the second week of the relaxation of the measures imposed due to the pandemic and the figures reflect the behavior shown by the citizens.
 
Dr Marios Loizou, Scientific Director at the Nicosia Directorate of the Cyprus State Health Services Organisation said that globally 4,375 million people have been infected and 295,000 have died. At the same time, he noted, 1,622 million patients have totally recovered.

He also pointed out that lately the number of positive cases in Germany has increased and yesterday the number of cases tripled.
 
Dr. Loizou said the total number of deaths from SARS-CoV-2 is 24 but only 17 have COVID-19 as the final cause of death. Eleven are males and 6 females with median age 71,4 years.
 
In addition he said that according to figures as they stood at 1500 local time , five patients are hospitalized at Famagusta Reference Hospital and their condition is good. Three patients were discharged.

Three patients are intubated in the ICU of Nicosia General Hospital and their condition is critical but stable.

Dr Loizou said that 4 patients are being treated in wards in all hospitals except the Famagusta one.
He pointed out that today’s number of hospitalized patient is the smallest in fifty days. He also expressed satisfaction over the positive trend in combination with the small number of admissions.

Dr Loizou also referred to the positive and encouraging news coming from abroad as regards the drug therapy  however he said that all around the world people are treated in ICUs in really serious condition.

According to Dr Loizou recently a young patient with severe form of pneumonia at ICU in Nicosia General Hospital was treated using the ECMO method for the first time. He explained that a device provides the patient with oxygen and helps the circulation, adding that this method is used in specialized centers abroad. He said that the patient is still intubated but she is off the ventilator slowly.
