Two COVID-19 cases announced on Thursday

Two COVID-19 cases were confirmed on Thursday in Cyprus from a total of 2.602 tests, the authorities announced. Therefore, the total number of confirmed cases has reached 941.

Announcing the results at a press conference Dr Leontios Kostrikis, member of the Scientific Committee on the pandemic said that the two people who tested positive were out of 60 tests on people who came into contact with confirmed cases.

No people tested positive out of 730 tests were carried out in the framework of the programme for testing 10.000 employees at hairdressing salons, barber shops, tattoo studios and restaurants.

Moreover,1,042 samples were tested in the framework of the programme for testing 20.000 pupils and school employees and 142 in the framework of the programme for testing 20.000 employees in the retail sector and at construction sites.

A total of 64 samples were tested in the framework of the programme for testing specific groups of the population through Public Medical Centers.

No people tested positive out of 175 tests were carried out by the Microbiological Labs of the General Hospitals, 41 tests on people who have been repatriated or348 tests were carried out at the private initiative.

“The total number of positive cases has reached 941,” he said.

The data before us form a particularly "optimistic picture", he said, adding that they allow us to proceeed with more certainty with plans to lift restrictive measures.

Kostrikis also urged people to continue to be careful and remain vigilant.

According to Dr Marios Loizou, Scientific Director at the Nicosia Directorate of the Cyprus State Health Services Organisation only four persons were treated at Famagusta General Hospital, which is the COVID-19 refence hospital, until 1500 hours local time today. One of them is treated at the Increased Care Unit. One individual was discharged from the hospital. Three other patients are on ventilators at Nicosia General Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

A patient who had undergone extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been out of the ICU for 48 hours, he said. She still has a long way to go but we wish her a full recovery, he added.

Loizou also thanked all health professionals who have battled daily with the disease for months now.
