Two deaths, covid infections drop in week from 23 to 29 September

Cyprus announced two deaths due to Covid-19 with new infections declining to 2,681 in the week from September 23 to 29 from 2,932 the week before.

According to Ministry of Health’s weekly report, a total of 67,682 tests were carried out with the overall positivity rate dropping to 3.96% from 4.40% the week before.

The deaths concern two males aged 63 and 79 years-old, who passed away on September 21 and 23 respectively.

The total number of deaths with a terminal cause of COVID-19 reached 1,182, with the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic amounting to 587,994.

Furthermore, the number of patients treated in hospitals declined to 47 from 51 in the previous week, of whom 2 in serious condition. Meanwhile, 1 patient who has ceased to be infectious continues to be intubated due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.

According to the press release, 2,394 molecular tests (PCR) resulted in 160 positive cases, with a positivity rate of 6.68%. In addition, 65,288 rapid tests were carried out, resulting in 2,521 positive cases, with a positivity rate of 3.86%.

In total, 2,035 PCR tests were carried out on private initiative, detecting 132 positive cases were detected, with a rate of 6.49%, while 44,483 rapid antigen tests were carried out and 2,409 positive cases were detected, with a positivity rate of 5.42%.

Meanwhile, 20,805 rapid antigen tests were carried out through the Ministry of Health programmes and 112 positive cases were detected, while 10,359 rapid tests were carried out at the sampling sites detecting 74 positive cases, with a positivity rate of 0.71%.

According to the Ministry, 633 rapid tests were carried out in primary schools with no positive cases detected, while 1,550 rapid tests carried out in high schools detecting 3 new infections with a positivity rate of 0.19%.

Furthermore, 357 rapid tests were performed by the National Guard detecting 1 new infection (positivity rate of 0.28%) while 4,556 tests were carried out in nursing homes detecting 12 new cases (0.26%) and 3,350 rapid tests were carried out in closed structures, after which 22 new cases were diagnosed (0.66%).
