Galanos Alexis

Biography

Mr. Alexis Galanos was born in 1940. He finished his Secondary Education in 1958 at the American College Athens. He studied at Cambridge University (Kings College) where in 1962 got his MA in Economic Science and Sociology. He also studied Law and got the title Barrister at Law of Inner Temple. After his studies he dealt with his family commercial business at Famagusta, his origins. For a series of years he was Director of the Cyprus Central Bank, Director of the Famagusta Commercial and Industrial Chamber and Vice-President of the Employers and Industrialists Federation. He was a founding member of the then Democratic side in 1976, which was then renamed to Democratic Party. The same year he was elected MP of the Democratic Party and took the presidency of the Parliamentary Commission of Commerce and Industry until 1978. In 1978 he took the presidency of the Parliamentary Commission of Foreign Affairs. He was also President of the Parliamentary Commission of Internal Affairs and Defence from 1981-1985 and at the same time period vice-president of the Parliamentary Commission for the Economy. For a decade, 1981-1991, he was the Parliamentary representative of the Democratic Party and until 1989 he was representing the Democratic Party at the National Council. He was elected Vice-president of the Democratic Party. At the Parliamentary Elections of the 19th of May 1991 he was elected MP of the Democratic Party and later on the 30th of May 1991, he was elected President of the Parliament. He was re-elected MP of the Democratic Party at the Parliamentary elections of the 26th of May 1996 and he was the President of the Parliamentary Commission for the Economy. From the 8th of October 1998 until the 17the of August 1999 he was the President of the Party of the Euro democratic Renewal.
