07/01/2004 12:09
Socialist Party EDEK proposed on Wednesday the enforcement of the institution of Commissioner for the Consumer to eliminate profiteering and high prices. EDEK Chairman, Yiannakis Omirou had a meeting this morning with the Consumers’ Association to discuss the latest phenomena in the market and expressed his concern on the cases of profiteering and the high cost of life.

Mr. Omirou clarified that in a free market and competitive environment, the intervention of the state is not necessary, however the latter must boost the protection of the consumer with the strengthening of the Consumers Protection Service and the Cyprus Consumers’ Association.

At this point, Mr. Omirou proposed the institution of the Consumer Commissioner, which is successfully adopted by the EU member states. “The imposition of this institution is necessary, as the Cypriot consumers will be in the position to express their complaints”.

On the other hand, Chairman of the Consumers’ Association, Petros Marcou expressed his gratitude to Mr. Omirou for his interest and emphasized that the Association will continue the market researches more intensively for the best information of the Cypriot consumer.
