Area of licenced projects up by 13%

The area of licensed projects rose by 13.2% in the first four months of 2015, according to the latest Cystat data.

According to the figures, in the period January – April 2015 the area of licensed projects reached 293,7 thousand square meters from 259,4 thousand in the corresponding period of 2014.

Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

An increase is observed in all municipalities except Larnaca and Paphos.

In free Famagusta, the area of licensed projects rose by 53.4% to 20.3 thousand sq. meters from 13.2 thousand sq. meters in the corresponding period of 2014.

An increase of 40.4% is registered in Limassol reaching 99.7 thousand sq. meters from 71.0 thousand sq. meters in the first four months of 2014.

In Nicosia, the area of licensed projects for the period January – April 2015 increased by 15.9% to 99.1 thousand sq. meters from 85.5 thousand sq. meters.

In Paphos, the decrease reached 24.7% as the area of licensed projects fell to 34.9 thousand sq. meters from 46.4 thousand sq. meters in the corresponding period of 2014.

In Larnaca a decline of 8.2% was recorded as the licensed projects area fell to 39.7 thousand sq. meters from 43.2 thousand sq. meters.

The number of dwelling units recorded an increase as it rose by 21.3%.

These building permits provide for the construction of 1.032 dwelling units against 851 in the corresponding period of 2014.

The total value of these permits for the period January – April 2015 increased by 5% to €314.3 million from €299.3 million in the corresponding period of 2014.

During the period January – April 2014, the number of building permits issued (both residential and non-residential), increased by 2.3% to 1.600 from 1.637 last year.
